Kavala is the second biggest urban centre in Macedonia in a location of strategic importance and great development potential. The city is characterized by the picturesque seaside and the interesting architecture, combining neoclassical buildings with more modern ones. It is a major tourist attraction of northern Greece with many beautiful beaches and touristic sites. It is situated in Kavala Bay, across the island of Thassos.

Kavala is connected to the Egnatia motorway and is in one and a half-hour drive from Thessaloniki (160 km). It has its own airport as well as bus station.

How to reach Kavala and IHU University Campus

To reach Kavala by plane the most common way is through the International "Macedonia" airport of Thessaloniki (SKG), which has daily direct flights from major european cities. The ride from Thessaloniki airport to Kavala is about one hour and a half, all on the Egnatia Motorway. You can travel either by taxi with the fare being at around 130 € (one way) or by bus with the ticket both ways set at less than 30 €. The duration of the trip with a taxi is less than 2 hours, while traveling by bus is usually around 2.5 hours, but you have to add at least another 30 minutes that you will need to reach the bus station from the airport. Another standard way to reach Kavala is to catch a connecting flight from the Athens Eleftherios Venizelos Airport (ATH) to the local Kavala "Megas Alexandros" airport (KVA). During the summer season, there are also several charter flights from various major european airports. The taxi cost from Kavala airport to the city is about 35 € and the duration of the ride is about 20 minutes. However, there is a bus route from the airport to the city and the other way around, before and after each flight, costing only 5 €.
